Crowd funding website Kickstarter has helped launch a video game console, a smart-watch and a Veronica Mars movie. Now, one company can thank the site for an award.
Aerovelo, a Canadian-based aviation company won the AHS Sikorsky Prize. The company received almost $35,000 from Kickstarter to help it build Atlas, a human powered helicopter.
Atlas hovered for over a minute, maintained a height above three meters and stayed within a ten meter by ten meter box to win the award.
The challenge has been open for over 30 years, but Atlas is the first aircraft to meet the three qualifications.
What's more amazing about this feat is that the helicopter uses less than one horsepower.
Aerovelo won $250,000 for the award.
The company will apply the winnings towards the development of efficient-engineering projects.
