Global Tiger Day

Today is Global Tiger Day

Today is Global Tiger Day, a day to raise awareness about the dwindling number of tigers in the wild.

About 100 years ago, 100,000 tigers lived in the wild. Today, that number is about 3,200.

There are more tigers in captivity in the United States than in the wild.  About 5,000 tigers live in captivity here in the States.

Habitat loss and poaching are two of the biggest contributors to the declining population of wild tigers.

Below are some Twitter feeds to check out to keep up to date with wildlife protection.

@World_Wildlife is the twitter feed for the World Wildlife Fund.

@PantheraCats is the feed for Panthera, a conservation group dedicated to saving different cat species.

@TheWCS is the feed for The Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates The Bronx Zoo, as well as other animal parks.
