Dave's Taverna Auctioned Off

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- A new owner took over Dave's Taverna after an auction on Monday.

Dave's Taverna sold for a total of $770,000. The public foreclosure sale attracted close to 50 potential buyers.

The new owner of Dave's Taverna does not want to give his name. He says he's not sure what he'll do with the building. The previous owner, David Miller, says it was hard for him to watch his restaurant go to the highest bidder. "Probably looking back, hindsight being 20/20, probably spending a little more time inside the restaurant making sure it was solid," said Miller. He says he does not regret dedicating his time to improving the downtown area and working with the Harrisonburg Downtown Alliance.

What's Next for Old Dave's Taverna Building?

HARRISONBURG,Va. (WHSV) -- Giles Stone, won the auction for the building that housed Dave's Taverna Monday afternoon and now has a decision to make.

Stone would like to lease it, but so far he has not made a decision about who it would go to, although he has received several calls from interested parties.

Stone will to take about 30 days to make a decision and until then, the building will be empty.

He said David Miller, the former owner of Dave's Taverna, has expressed interest in leasing the property.

While Stone is considering that option, he is also talking to other interested parties and nothing is definite. Stone said he bought the building because he wants downtown Harrisonburg to do well.

He is a supporter of JMU and the other local colleges and said he's pleased with the price. Eddie Bumbaugh from the Downtown Renaissance said the building doing well has implications for the rest of downtown.

"A quality restaurant in that location is extremely important for downtown in our community. It's strategically located right on Main Street. It has parking next door. Dave's Taverna has become a fixture for people who are students here or local people, as well as visitors," said Bumbaugh.

Bumbaugh said the auction did not include the rooftop bar or taratsa, which was leased to Dave's through the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic. The usage of that property in the future would need to be worked out again.
