Hardware Stores Stock Up on Supplies Ahead of Winter Weather

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Since Harrisonburg and the surrounding area are expected to get hit with a lot of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday, stores in the area are joining in that effort by stocking up on supplies.

Assistant Manager Robert Mishler said one thing to know is that a lot of people really wait until the last minute to buy things like a snow shovel.

They started preparing over the weekend to make sure they'd have shelves stocked, ahead of any bad weather.

That includes everything from salt to basic batteries.

Department heads ordered batteries and other needed items on Saturday.

This week the outside of the store is lined with rows of salt and shovels, and store employees distribute salt to numerous businesses in the area.

Mishler said flashlights, batteries and heaters are other popular items are expected to go.

Mishler recommends grain scoops for when the snow gets really deep.

Right now, there are already 225 snow shovels in stock and Mishler's best advice is to plan ahead.

"Get yourself a good snow shovel and don't wait until it's snowing because once it starts the snow shovels just walk out of here," Mishler said.

The Rockingham Co-Op will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m and there are other stores, such as Lowes that carry the same items.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY - A woman died in a car crash in Rockingham County Tuesday morning. It happened at North Valley Pike and Old Sawmill Road. An investigator with Virginia State Police says the victim is Violet Nelson, 78, of New Market.

According to Virginia State Police, a truck was driving north-bound on North Valley Pike when the driver lost control for reasons that are unknown. The driver swerved into the other lane and hit Nelson who was heading south.

The truck driver is in serious condition and was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Man Dies in Traffic Crash in Page County

PAGE COUNTY -- A Page County man is dead after a crash involving two cars and a tractor trailer. According to Virginia State Police, the victim is Mike Rucker.

He coached baseball and basketball for years, all mostly as a volunteer.

The crash happened yesterday afternoon in front of Dan's Steakhouse in Page County. Rucker rear ended a tractor trailer and then was rear ended by a pickup truck.

He died at the scene.

Rucker's friend, Tony Weakley, says he was someone you could always count on. He says he drew respect from the players he coached.

"Oh, he had tremendous effect. He was a coach that when he would come into the gym, the players just automatically liked him, and would go to him, and talked to him, and I guarantee you there's a lot of hurt kids here this morning,” said Tony Weakley.

Rucker was 45. He was recently divorced and leaves behind one son and one step-son, according to Weakley.
