February 11, 2010 - Records Shatter From Back To Back Snowfall

One of our snowiest seasons ever is upon us - find out who has shattered records and who's on their way.

Now that the snow has tapered off and moved out to sea (except for the western slopes of the higher elevations), we can talk about records. All three major DC Metro area airports - IAD, DCA, BWI - are hitting the record books this winter. While we still have over a month to go before the official start of spring, all three airports are now in their snowiest season ever recorded.

Of course, reporting sites all over the Valley differ in their records and have also differed greatly in snowfall amounts this winter. Our George Hirschmann spoke with Richard Weaver (Dale Enterprise weather station), and Mr. Weaver mentioned that 53" is their highest recorded seasonal snowfall. WHSV Harrisonburg is currently at 53" for the season. Our weather watcher Carl Quintrell in Stanley, Virginia has reported 60.1" so far this winter, with his all time record season snowfall total of 67" set back in the 1995-1996 season.

With more snow in the forecast for our President's Day, many Valley weather stations will be shattering records as well. If you're about to shatter snowfall records at your house, please comment and let us know!
