A special Saturday morning edition of Mallory's Weather Blog - I woke up and my thermometer said it was 82.5 degrees outside - at 7:15am! You know it's going to be a hot one when that happens.
We broke records in Harrisonburg yesterday - the previous record of 95 degrees was broken by our high temperature of 97 degrees at the station. Our record high for Saturday is 98 degrees and I have a feeling that we may break that one too.
What's different about Friday & Saturday's heat versus the triple digit heat at the end of June, is that our July heat comes with a much higher dewpoint. When we were hitting 100, 101 degrees at SHD in June, the dewpoint was 63, 64 degrees giving us a heat index of about 105 degrees. However, Friday's temperature of 97 degrees came with a dewpoint of 77 degrees at SHD, bringing the heat index to 111 degrees (hence the heat advisory).
It boggled my mind to see the 8:20pm observation at SHD last night. The heat index was still 101 degrees!
It's the weekend and not all of us are lucky enough to be at the beach or poolside, so please take precautions as you go on with your Saturday activities. Light colored, light weight clothing is a must - as are frequent breaks and lots of hydration breaks! Remember, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks dehydrate the body. Eat small, but frequent meals to keep the body energized. Or you can simply stay inside and enjoy the wonderful air conditioning with a cold glass of water (like me)!
Stay cool this weekend! Relief isn't too far away!
