Cooler Air to Break the Summer Heat

A strong cold front is headed our way for the weekend bring some much cooler temperatures.

Some big changes are headed our way for the weekend and major temperature changes will be felt from Friday's summer heat, to Sunday's fall like afternoon!

A cold front is moving in from the west and with that, it will bring some rain and storms for at least the first half of the weekend. Bad news for any football games on Saturday. Depending on how fast or slow this front moves will make a difference on how long the rain sticks around Saturday evening. However you can count on some very wet and muddy fields.

Here's a look at our forecast map as of early Saturday morning.

Notice the front still off to the west.

Our cooler temperatures will come from the area of High pressure behind the front

By Sunday the cooler air will already be making it's presence. And yes, that high pressure is from Canada, meaning it's some cooler northern air. But it will be a nice refreshing change to the heat and high humidity we've seen this week. That's mainly in part to the tropical ar mass that was left behind by the remnants of Isaac. We basically haven't had any weather systems to push that tropical air out of the area, until now that is.

Here's a look at a model forecast of Sunday morning at 500mb, which is about 18,000 feet high.

We use this map to depict upper level troughs and ridges.

Troughs are where the cooler air sits and ridges are where the warmer air is.

Notice that trough north of our area and that's going to send down that cooler, drier air. Much more refreshing than the moist air we've seen this week.

Expect to see temperatures range from the upper 80s Friday to the lower 70s Sunday! This is about the time of year we start the "roller coaster." We'll see warm temperatures for a few days and then a strong front will move through and drop the temperature 10-15 degrees. So prep those football sweatshirts because there is some good fall like weather that's heading our way!
