Terry Ryan and Diana mitchel sent me this picture of a girl whose hair is standing up on end and wants to know
"Is this something that happens before a storm?"
Click on the video for my answer.
Lightning is dangerous and unpredictable. The place of a lightning strike cannot be forecasted, and there are many things about lightning that we do not know and are trying to understand.
Some interesting facts about lightning you may not know:
*It is estimated that at any given second, about 100 lightning strikes are occurring on earth
*So called "Heat Lightning" is actually real lightning where you are just too far away to hear the actual thunder.
*Lightning occurs most frequently during thunderstorms, but can also happen during volcanic eruptions, heavy snow storms, and really intense forest fires.
*If you hear thunder you are close enough to a storm to be struck and you should NOT be outside. You can be struck by lightning even if you are within ten miles of a storm.
*The temperature of lightning bolt is actually about 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun! (That's my favorite one).
*About 10% of people struck by lightning are killed, they end up suffering from cardiac arrest.
*Lightning cannot happen without thunder and thunder cannot happen without lightning
