After a Harrisonburg school bus accident in March, the Harrisonburg School Board decided some changes needed to be made.

Wenesday, first responders will be able to practice what exactly they should do if a bus crashes, and hopefully work on mistakes that were made back in March.

The simulated accident is to see how quickly first responders can be on the scene, as well as test how Harrisonburg administrators handle the situation.

The mock crash is a direct result of March's bus accident on West Market Street. After admitting that the crash was mishandled, the city school board requested this drill.

Superintendent Dr. Donald Ford says one area that needs work is dealing with the children. Many students were released from the scene before they were evaluated. Ford says this drill should also highlight any other problems that need attention.

"Anytime you can practice something, then it makes it a whole lot better. We're concerned about the safety of our children and we're glad that the police department, the fire department, the emergency responders are participating in something like this to make it safer for our kids," says Ford.

This is the first mock drill for a school bus accident. Students will play victim roles in the crash, but they will not be actually taken to the hospital.
