Down syndrome is the most common genetic disorder, and some children with the condition are born with serious complications.
Up to 50 percent of children with down syndrome are born with some type of heart defect.
Others experience thyroid problems, hearing loss or poor vision.
One expert says early intervention makes a difference.
He says the defects can be repaired, and these children will continue to live a fairly normal life.
While previously they died, today they survive.
