A food program is stepping in to make sure kids don't go hungry on the weekends.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is trying to establish the BackPack Program that would give students who qualify a supply of canned soups and vegetables, fruits, and other healthy options before they leave for home on Friday afternoons.
Mary Jane Blaine is part of the food bank. She says the program would be in Winchester and Frederick County.
The program would be a supplement to free lunch and breakfast programs in public schools.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves over 7,400 children in Winchester, up about 2,600 from 2005.
