Father Charged in Accident, Toddler Not in Car Seat

A man in Harrisonburg is accused of driving drunk with his toddler son in the car and not properly restrained in a car seat.

The accident happened Thursday night around 9:20 pm.

Police say the father of the two year old was driving and hit a parked car on Broad Street, making the vehicle flip.

Enrique Baltazar-Corona was charged with driving while intoxicated and abuse/neglect of a child.

Wanda Willis with the Harrisonburg Fire Department says that about eight out of nine car seats checked are not installed correctly.

Because there are so many different kinds of car seats available, it can be confusing for parents to know the safest way to install them.

Willis says an easy step for parents is to read the instruction manual that comes with the car seat or to check your car owners manual for proper installation.

Fire Station One in Harrisonburg also has a full-time safety technician to teach parents about car seat safety.
