Winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play, the New York Times described Circle Mirror Transformation as “absorbing, unblinking, sharply funny”.
The Story: How do you get a carpenter, former actress or teenager pretend they are a tree? Put them together in a community-center drama class. CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION reveals the humor in human foibles as 5 souls intersect in a community acting class. Through 'theater games,' they are transformed while learning about themselves and each other; about love and relationships.
The Valley Playhouse cast includes veteran actors-- Harrisonburg residents Mary Ruberry, Howard Jeffries, Jenny Sappington, Elkton’s Stephen Winegard, and Angela Trovato, a Pittsburg resident and current Theatre major at JMU. Ms. Ruberry, a JMU theatre major in the late 1970’s has returned to the Valley after an acting and directing career that included lead roles with Washington’s prestigious Wooly Mammoth Theatre. Mr. Weingard worked as a Hollywood stunt man/film actor and had a continuing role on the long-running television General Hospital series. The play is directed by Tom Arthur, former James Madison theater faculty member and department head, and designed by David Vogel, faculty member at Eastern Mennonite University and Bridgewater College.
