Applauding VA City for Approving Report Opposing Proposed Power Plant

Environmental groups are applauding Virginia Beach City Council's approval of a report recommending opposition to a coal-burning plant in Surry County.

Old Dominion Electric Cooperative has proposed the $6 billion Cypress Creek Power Station. The co-op is seeking air permits, a process that could take up to two years.

Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition said the council vote this week is aimed at what would be the largest coal-burning power plant in Virginia.

The coalition said the plant would harm air quality in the Hampton Roads area and is a threat to the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia Beach City Council members directed staff to implement a task force's recommendations, including the city's opposition to the plant.
