Considering Resolution on Drilling Near WV City's Water Supply

Morgantown is considering separate resolutions that would give the city more control over natural gas drilling.

The Dominion Post reports the measures are on the agenda for a city council committee session Tuesday.

One would ask the state Department of Environmental Protection to bar drilling within one mile of Morgantown's water supply until the city can be certain the gas wells are safe.

The other would ask for state authority to pass city laws or rules that protect the water supply.

The measures stem from a Charleston-based company's plan to sink wells along the Monongahela River and near Morgantown's drinking water treatment plant.

The DEP already has ordered drilling postponed until negotiations with the city are concluded.
