Old Dominion Electric Cooperative says a report on its proposed coal-fired plant in Surry County "grossly misrepresents" its potential environmental and public health impact.

ODEC responded to a report by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released Monday. It states that the $6 billion coal-fired plant would cause an estimated 26 premature deaths annually and generate additional regional health costs exceeding $200 million a year.

The report is aimed at the Cypress Creek Power Station in the town of Drendon.

The cooperative said the potential environmental and public health impacts of the plant are considered insignificant by state and federal environmental measures.

ODEC called the bay report "inaccurate and misleading."
