A top executive with a company seeking to mine the largest uranium deposit in the United States says it will push for legislation in 2012 to end a 29-year Virginia ban on uranium mining.

Walter Coles Jr. is executive vice president of Virginia Uranium Inc. In a webcast last month with investors, he described the political climate in Virginia as "fairly pro-nuclear" and said the company has lined up sponsors of the legislation.

A National Academy of Sciences committee is assessing the statewide impacts of mining the 119-million pound uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County.

Virginia Uranium's project manager, Patrick Wales, called the NAS study critical to the company's future actions.
