A Virginia congressman wants the state's offshore waters opened to oil and gas exploration.
Republican Bob Goodlatte introduced legislation Tuesday that would require the Department of the Interior to move forward with a Virginia lease sale no later than one year after the bill's passage. The legislation requires the governor to request the lease sale.
Gov. Bob McDonnell immediately endorsed the Goodlatte proposal,
arguing that tapping offshore gas and oil deposits will move the nation closer to energy independence.
McDonnell has made energy a cornerstone of his Republican
administration. He had been pushing hard to open offshore tracts to
exploration until President Barack Obama issued a moratorium on
East Coast drilling following the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
