Ground has been broken for a new power plant in Richmond that will convert methane gas from a landfill into electricity.
The 6.4-megawatt plant will be built by Fortistar at a Republic Services Inc. landfill in Richmond. Old Dominion Electric Cooperative will buy the electricity it produces.
The companies announced their joint power purchase agreement at Tuesday's groundbreaking.
The plant will produce enough electricity to supply about 3,700 residences. It's expected to begin commercial operation in late fall.
