A coalition of health groups is asking Virginia Beach City Council members to oppose a coal-fired power plant planned for neighboring Surry County.
Old Dominion Electric Cooperative is proposing to build a 1,500-megawatt power plant. The company recently announced its decision to delay the project for up to two years.
But the Virginia Asthma Coalition, the Consortium for Infant and Child Health and the American Lung Association say the project should be dropped altogether.
The groups say Virginia Beach City Council should oppose the plant because it would be located downwind of the city and contribute to air pollution and harm the health of area residents.
The groups planned to present their case at the council's Tuesday night meeting.
