Permits for WV Quarry Approved Despite Opposition

Updated: Thu 3:44 PM, Jan 27, 2011

State regulators have approved a proposed shale quarry in the Eastern Panhandle that's opposed by a citizen group.

Media outlets report that the Department of Environmental Protection issued permits Wednesday to North Mountain Shale allowing operation of the quarry in Gerrardstown.

Mining and Reclamation director Tom Clarke said in a news release that the agency determined the quarry would have minimal and temporary effects on the environment.

A group called Citizens Alliance for a Responsible Environment opposes the quarry. Member Wendy Hudock says the group hasn't yet reviewed the permits.
