Study to Extend Light Rail in VA City Pushed Back

A study on extending light rail to Virginia Beach is being pushed back for about a year.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that Hampton Roads Transit wants to wait until Norfolk's system is operational.

Transit agency CEO and President Philip Shucet told the Virginia Beach City Council Tuesday that ridership numbers from Norfolk's light rail will help provide more accurate information for the study.

Norfolk's system, called The Tide, is expected to begin operations before the end of the year.

Shucet had put the $6.6 million study on indefinite hold in March after federal transit officials raised concerns about phasing in extensions and models used to project ridership.
