Town Approves Dominion Biomass Plant Conversion

Altavista officials have approved Dominion Virginia Power's plan to convert a coal-fired power plant to run on renewable biomass.

The News & Advance reports that the town council approved a special permit for the project Tuesday.

The Altavista Power Station is one of three coal-fired plants that Dominion plans to convert to biomass. The others are in Hopewell and Southhampton County.

Dominion received a conditional use permit from the Southampton County Board of Supervisors Monday.

Dominion has said switching the plants' fuel to mostly waste wood would reduce nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, mercury and other emissions.
