The executive committee of the Virginia Young Democrats is urging lawmakers to keep a ban on uranium mining in place.
The position was announced Monday in a statement issued by the group, which represents Democrats under the age of 36.
Virginia has banned uranium mining since 1982. Virginia Uranium Inc. wants the ban lifted so it can mine one of the world's biggest known deposits, in Pittsylvania County.
The company maintains uranium can be safely mined.
Various studies are looking into the issue, including one by the National Acadamies of Science.
