Halloween on the Square

Children, adults and even dogs are invited to spend some time in downtown Harrisonburg for Halloween on the Square.

The Downtown Renaissance joined with Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation to offer the event for its fourth year. Many activities for the event are free.

Organizers expect about 500 children to attend with their families. Events start on Friday at 1 p.m. with the winners of the downtown window decorating contest being announced.

On Saturday, almost 40 downtown shops will participate in trick-or-treating starting at 10 a.m. Events will also include games, crafts and contests.

There will also be a costume contest and mini-parade at 1 p.m., though if you are dressing up your dog, their costume contest is at Fundfest Park at 2 p.m.

Throughout the day, there will be hay rides, storytelling at the Court Square Theater and pumpkin painting at the Harrisonburg Farmer's Market.

A new event will be taking place at the Massanutten Regional Library with a special costume contest for the book To Kill a Mockingbird and other games.

Another new event at 7 Saturday night is the Haunted Harrisonburg walking tour, which costs $5. The 7 p.m. tour is sold out but other times have been added. Please call 432-8935 for more information.
