Free Fire Detectors

Two fires in the last few days have left residents in Page County without a home. Fire officials are asking people to remember their fire safety plans.

During the last three years, Page County fire officials have handed out more than 10,000 smoke detectors in our area thanks to a state program.

The county says this program can save lives. Robin Kramer's house has been destroyed after a fire ripped through the ceilings.

While she wasn't home when the blaze started, she says she now sees how important smoke detectors are.

"The kids’ rooms are gone. There's nothing. My daughter got a wallet out of her bedroom and that’s it, her cloths, her bed. If there were no smoke detectors and she had been laying there, I don't even want to think about it," says Kramer.

Lt. Keith Higgs says Page County has a program to offer smoke detectors for free, because most of the time, people are home when a fire strikes.

"The early detection of smoke and flame is very important in giving a heads up. Most fires happen at night between 10 and six when people are asleep, and when you're sound sleepers, you need to be woken up," says Higgs.

Any Page County resident can call the fire department to request a detector. A fire official will even come to your house, install the detector and come up with fire safety plans for you.

Higgs says it’s surprising how many people aren't properly protected.

He says, "We find a lot of senior citizens that don't have smoke detectors and a lot of them don't have batteries."

The program is also offered in Augusta and Rockingham counties.
