Brisk Temperatures Drive Harrisonburg Parade

The Harrisonburg parade took place Friday under clear skies and residents were treated to floats, music, and free candy. However, as anticipation rose for the parade, the temperatures dropped.

Hundreds of residents lined the streets, some arriving extra early for that perfect spot, but the real story was that you couldn't see some of them, especially children, because they were huddled under jackets, blankets, and caps.

If you were concerned about keeping yourself warm, think about having to worry about 13 children.

"No, it's really cold and we definitely were nervous that it's going to rain and we have back up plans, but just for all the kids to get fully bundled up we have hot chocolate and hot apple cider," says Emma Smith, a volunteer with Camp Kaleidoscope.

Their goal was to show the young foster children that you can be cold and have a great time too.

"A couple of them have long underwear and we have scarfs, and hats, and gloves, and coats, and I know some of the coats were provided by Camp K," says Smith.

"It feels freezing," says five-year-old Justin Tutwyler, who loves watching the parade.

He looks forward to seeing his brother play in the Turner Ashby Band. He eventually got his wish, and so did the volunteers. The kids also stayed warm and well behaved.

"We really wanted to do with that was to get the kids connected with the community," says Smith. "They went and had dinner at Jess' Lunch just to sort of get them out and involved and letting them know that there's a bigger organization in the community that they're involved with."

After all was said and done, they banded together to fight those cold temperatures and at some points, they literally had to group together.
