The Harrisonburg City Council has passed a measure members hope will help bring more businesses downtown.
The measure approves an economic revitalization zone that gives tax breaks for new construction in the area.
The Virginia General Assembly recently cleared the way for this type of tax exemption, and Harrisonburg is one the few cities taking advantage of it.
The more a developer invests in the downtown part of the city, the longer it has to pay off the taxes.
The city's economic zone is located within the city's B-1 business zone and the Virginia Main Street district.
