The Department of Defense has identified the remains of two missing U.S. Air Force servicemen who served in the Korean War.
Colonel Douglas Hatfield of Shenandoah, Virginia, and Captain Richard Simpson of Fair Haven, Michigan, were two of 11 crew members on a B-29 Superfortress that left an air base in Japan to bomb targets in North Korea on April 12, 1951. Enemy fighters attacked the plane, and it crashed.
In 2000, a joint U.S.-North Korean team excavated an infantry fighting position in Kujang County where they recovered remains that included those of Simpson and Hatfield.
The remains are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
Funeral dates have not been set.
