A local college created an environmentally-safe item for holiday shopping. To cut down on the use of plastic bags, Eastern Mennonite University's Creation Care Council designed reusable shopping bags.
The bags are made out of 80 percent recycled cotton and 20 percent plastic bottles. The bags cost $7 each.
"We had a hundred made and we sold all but three of them in about two hours," says Matt Styer, the design creator. "We're going to send in another order very quickly. We're selling the first batch basically at cost. We're not trying to make any money. We think the long-term benefits will outweigh any profit we might make."
Styer says a new shipment will be available for purchase in January.
