State Vehicle Inspections

Governor Kaine released details on his 2008-2010 budget Monday. Kaine says one measure that would make the Commonwealth more efficient would require state vehicle inspections every two years, instead of every year. It would also raise the cost from $15 to $20.

Not everyone thinks that's a good idea. Vicki Edelmann says she isn't sure a plan to change the state inspection requirement from one to two years is good for her. Her car is getting older and she wants it to be checked.

"I think it would be a great idea to keep up with those people who have older cars myself included," says Edelmann.

Bryan Lamond with Warehouse Auto Repair says inspections are key to safety on the road.

"People want to drive faster and faster and want to get where they're going. We need to be able to stop them, and get everyone where they're going in a safe manner, make sure the seat belts are working, your airbags work, your tires have enough traction for wet conditions," says Lamond.

He says the only way the inspection could still be practical every two years is to change the standard for items like tire tread.

"They might pass today and then in two months, they're riding on bald tires, and it definitely would not last the two year minimum. So if we went to two years, the inspection procedures are going to have to change accordingly," says Lamond.

Kaine plans to change the price of an inspection, and Lamond says that could make the test more complete.

"I'd like to see a little more money on the inspection, so we can feel more free to do a complete inspection," says Lamond.

The General Assembly still has to approve the change. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
