Holiday Travel Increase Predicted

AAA predicts that 1.8 million Virginians will be traveling 50 miles or more during the Christmas-New Year's holiday period, up nearly two percent from last year.

AAA-Mid-Atlantic says more than 1.4 million Virginians will be on the roads. That's up by 2.5 percent. The rest will travel by air, train or bus.

Spokeswoman Martha Mitchell Meade says the survey asked people about travel between Wednesday, December 19 through Sunday, December 30.

Research for holiday travel is based on a national web survey in October of 2,200 adults by the Travel Industry Association, which conducts special research for AAA.

AAA-Mid-Atlantic serves 3.8 million members in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
