If you receive a surprise in the mail Wednesday, you're not alone. This day is the busiest delivery day for U.S. postal workers.
The Harrisonburg main office expects to sort 8,000 packages Wednesday, unlike most days when they handle about 2,500.
Without any extra staff or overtime hours, the postal service says they have a trick to help their mail carriers deliver packages on time.
"Having them work harder. It's just the mail volume actually decreases during Christmastime, so we don't have all the advertisements going around like you used to. So we pay more attention to the Christmas cards and letters and packages also," says Roy Smith, Harrisonburg Post Office.
Things will wind down later this week. That's when Smith says mail carriers in Harrisonburg finally get to relax with their Christmas party.
