Almost 100 Waynesboro families got some much needed help Wednesday with food for the holidays.

The food was supplied to parents of Wenonah Elementary School children as part of a program to help families who are struggling financially this holiday season.

Parent Harvey Catron says, "It's just me and the wife. We're working. Bills are coming up on us. Hardly have any money so, it helps out."

Catron is just one of several people who received a box filled with cereal, juice boxes and breakfast bars. He says the holiday season is especially tough on the wallet and this will make a big difference for his family.

He says, "It's very helpful. It really is. It really is very helpful."

Wenonah Elementary and the Blue Ridge area food bank teamed up to give out the food. It's part of a program they're running to fight hunger in young children.

Wenonah teacher Thea Jordan says, "Everyone needs to eat, you know, it's a basic need. So, when you're lacking in food, concentration is affected. You know, you're just general health is in affected so it benefits everyone if we can just provide enough foods for families."

The school decides who gets the food boxes based on the parents' income. Currently, there are more families that need help than to whom the school and food bank are able to give aid.

Jordan adds, "We have 150 students that are receiving the backpacks. At this moment, we have 175 that qualify and it's based off income."

Despite the fact that more people need help, the food bank and Wenonah Elementary are planning more food giveaways for the families in need throughout the school year. If they can raise some more money, they will try to help the other families that are not yet receiving assistance. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
