Federal Heating Help Increase

Home heating assistance for low-income families is set to increase this winter.

Congress is expected to approve a more than $400-million boost in the government's Low Income Home Energy Assistance program.

Lawmakers from cold-weather states have been pressing for extra money before Congress leaves for winter recess. They say high fuel prices have outpaced aid dollars.

Fuel aid advocates say the increase is a step in the right direction. But they warn it is still going to be a very tough winter for poor and elderly people on fixed incomes.

President Bush had proposed cutting the fuel aid program by nearly $380 million.
