Several crime-fighting organizations across the state now have a more money to keep their areas safer. Governor Tim Kaine announced the nearly $6 million in grants Thursday.

Some of the grants are geared specifically to fund projects that investigate violent crimes against women. Some who already receive the grant say this funding is much needed.

The Collins Center in downtown Harrisonburg has been receiving these grants for eight years. The center offers crisis intervention for assault victims and they recently added therapy to the list of services they already offer, which the associate director Hanna Foster says is thanks in part to grant money.

"It allows us to go to court with victims of sexual assault, help prepare them for trial and also do some of the community coordination work that we do with law enforcement and the Commonwealth's Attorney's office,"say Foster

This grant, totaling $23,780, and the other grants were approved this month by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

A few other local grant recipients are the city of Harrisonburg's criminal justice records system, which will receive $150,000 in federal money.

Violence services coordinator of Rockingham County will get a little more than $16,400 in federal funds.

The regional S.A.N.E. program of Augusta County gets more than $15,900.

Domestic violence programs, in Staunton and August County, will get more than $28,800.

The shelter for women V-STOP program in Winchester will receive more than $16,300.

Those recipients will also receive extra amounts of money that are matched locally. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
