A decision has finally been reached on whether to build the first wind turbine farm in Highland County.

The State Corporation Commission has ruled that 19 turbines can be erected in the county to aid in producing green energy.

County Supervisor Jerry Rexrode says, although some think they're an eyesore, the turbines will produce new energy.

He says, "I think everyone has to agree we need free energy, even the opponents. Everybody agrees we need free energy and Highland has one of the best sites in the state of Virginia."

Residents of Highland County have been divided on the issue ever since the project was proposed. Bud Cook is one person who says this change is good for the area.

He says, "I just think that it's, you know, energy efficient and we've got the wind and no other place in the state of Virginia has that and why not?"

Many residents who are not in favor of this project were hesitant to speak because they fear retaliation from other members of the community. County Supervisor Robin Sullenberger admits he wasn't in favor of the project to begin with, but he has since changed his opinion.

"Although I did vote against the project initially, that vote was based on the fact that I felt that early on, we didn't have information and we were being rushed to judgment," says Sullenberger. "A lot of those concerns have been answered."

Rexrode says the wind turbines could bring in as much as $200,000 in additional revenue to the area.
