Being Prepared for Emergencies

State emergency officials are urging all Virginians to make a New Year's resolution to get ready for any unexpected emergency.

And the Virginia Department of Emergency Management says there's three simple steps to be ready: get a kit, make a plan and stay informed.

In order to prepare, families and business should put together an emergency supply kit, that includes essential items to last at least three days. Items should include food and water, flashlights, a first aid kit, blankets and medications.

Virginians also should make a communication plan about what to do during an actual emergency. Officials also say to stay informed by listening for the most local, up-to-date information from emergency officials before, during and after a disaster.
