Hundreds of people turned out for the New Year's celebration, First Night, in downtown Harrisonburg.

The event, which is alcohol free, had activities for all family members.

People began crowding the area starting around 6 p.m. Monday when all the activities started.

Harrisonburg Mayor Rodney Eagle kicked off the night with a speech and then a parade marched through downtown.

Since restaurants and shops were open all night long, many community members turned out to enjoy the festivities.

The evening ended with a huge fireworks display on Court Square right as the clock struck midnight, tolling in 2008.
