Health officials in Virginia report that the number of suicides in the Commonwealth is climbing.
In 1999, there were 810 suicides reported in the state. That steadily grew to 884 in 2006.
That is double the number of people killed in homicides in that same year. Seventy-five percent of those who committed suicide in 2006 were male.
Health officials say friends and loved ones need to watch closely for warning signs of despair or suicidal threats.
