One local organization is asking taxpayers to help make up for a fundraising shortfall.

The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Boy's and Girl's Club fell short of its goal of $1.5 million in raising $33,000.

At Tuesday night's Harrisonburg City Council meeting, council members approved to increase the city's 2007-2008 budget by almost $5 million, with nearly $2 million of that going to pay for the Boy's and Girl's Club renovation project.

"I understand that council is disappointed that there are significant projects that require funding, but we believe that there is no better cause to spend funding on than the youth of our community," says Heather Denman, the club's executive director.

Although the city council did set aside money to pay for the debt, council hasn't decided whether it will force the club to pay them back or if it will affect future funding.
