Lawmakers in Harrisonburg are trying to make it easier to get around downtown.
The city council has approved a special permit to allow Holztman Oil to run a gas station and taxi cab service on East Market Street, right in the middle of downtown.
The service was initially denied by the planning commission, but the council decided to allow it to deal with demand.
"At one time we had many service stations downtown, almost better than a half a dozen. Now we're just down to two," says Mayor Rodney Eagle. "But as we have more people work and live downtown, we think it's important to have that convenience available."
The conditions of the agreement are only allowing eight taxi cabs to park at the site and no limos or buses are allowed.
