The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County is still trying to find out how to pay the city back $1.5 million after not being able to raise the money.

Both the Harrisonburg City Council and Boys & Girls Club board members aren't sure how the money will be raised, but both sides are hoping for a resolution with which everyone is comfortable.

Harrisonburg city councilman Charlie Chenault says the news that the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisonburg was unable to pay their $1.5 million debt was surprising.

"We had expected that they wouldn't be able to pay the debt in full. However we were surprised that they were not able to pay anything on it," says Chenault.

Though the board members of the club had a meeting earlier this week to discuss their options, they are still undecided.

Karl Waizecker, the Boys & Girls Club board president, says, "We're working very hard on coming up with some kind of solution that we can propose to city council and have a good discussion with them and be clear about what their expectations are and figure out a way to find a solution that everybody's happy with, and put it into action."

Chenault says the city council pays more than $300,000 a year to the club for maintenance, utilities and other cost. The council is still deciding if they'll use that expense to help cover some of the debt.

"That may be the fund that we have to look to for payment on our debt but right now we haven't made that decision," says Chenault.

The two groups will meet again on February 5 in hopes of reaching a resolution.
