The Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club became a hot topic at the Harrisonburg City Council meeting Tuesday, despite not even being on the agenda.

The council has decided to reduce its yearly contributions to the club from $100,000 to $50,000 for the next 15 years. By the end of that time, this will mean the Boys and Girls Club will pay back half of the $1.5 million it pledged to raise to pay for renovations to the Lucy Simms building.

On Wednesday, the club says it is surprised to hear this news.

"We thought, like I said, that we were working towards a meeting in February with the city council and we'd have a chance to present to them what our ideas were at that point and also hear what their expectations were to make sure we're all working toward the same thing," says Karl Weizacker, the board president of the Boys and Girls Club.

Weizacker says, if he knew the council was going to discuss the issue Tuesday, he would have attended the meeting.
