Local Soldiers Coming Home Early

Virginia National Guard soldiers from Staunton will be coming home early from Iraq.

The 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Staunton, left Virginia in May, to be deployed to Iraq. They were expected to serve in Iraq for one year, but instead, they will be coming home next month.

The 150 soldiers will return to Mississippi first for some processing in late February. Then they will return to the Valley for a welcome-home ceremony.

"They like to keep them as short as possible," said Capt. Dayna Rowden, of the Virginia National Guard, about the welcome-home ceremonies. "It's our priority to get them in the arms of their loved ones, because I think from the time that they leave, that's all they think about, is getting home."

That ceremony will take place at the Staunton Armory.
