Child Safety Seats

Too many children are riding around in car safety seats that have been improperly installed. That’s what some local safety seat technicians are saying.

Debra Weekley got a child safety seat installed for her five-month-old granddaughter. She says she wants to get it done correctly at the fire station, because of an accident she was in with her son.

"When he was about five months old, on the Saturday before Mother's Day, we were in a car accident. I was driving. We were hit in the rear panel. The car went up on two wheels. If hadn't been for that car seat, we both would have lost something that day," says Weekley.

"Eight out of ten car seats, there's some type of misuse, which is very high," says Cathy Stewart, Child Safety Seat Technician.

To help combat the problem, WHSV teamed up with Rockingham Memorial Hospital and the Harrisonburg Fire Department to have a permanent technician to check seat problems like keeping children strapped in tightly.

"Their children are very loose and if they were in a crash, they could very easily come out of that harness," says Stewart.

She also warns parents to make sure seat belts are auto-locking and that rear facing seats don't touch the seat in front of it.

"It’s really important to us that we teach the parents how to do this on their own, and we want to be an education resource," says Stewart.

To make sure your car is setup correctly, call the technician at (540) 810-0527.
