New signage has popped up on Interstate 81 where the road runs through Harrisonburg.
The signs along the northbound and southbound lanes direct visitors and tourists to downtown, but off of exit 245 instead of 247, the Route 33 exit.
In the past, people were directed to the Route 33 exit primarily because the visitor's center was in a different location and Harrisonburg didn't have a historic downtown district. Now that the city has two historic downtown districts, Downtown Renaissance requested new signs to direct tourists.
"That exit is more scenic. It's simpler to navigate, and once JMU's Performing Arts Center and a number of other features are completed, it just adds a very simple, attractive way to enter downtown," says Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance Executive Director Eddie Bumbaugh.
New wayfinding signs will be coming in the spring and summer, and they will be posted city-wide to direct people to key attractions around the city.
