To Sing for the Pope

Hundreds of people from the Washington area will compete this weekend for slots in a choir that will sing when Pope Benedict celebrates Mass in April at the new Nationals stadium.

Washington Archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Gibbs says more than 550 people have registered for the auditions, which begin Friday and end Monday. They will compete for 250 slots.

Gibbs says the auditions are closed because so many people have registered. They were open to adults in music ministry programs in the Washington Archdiocese and members of the Arlington Diocese choir.

Gibbs says the choir will sing music that reflects the region, including traditional chants as well as gospel and classical pieces.
