A Roanoke city councilman has resigned after questions were raised about his tab of nearly $15,000 last year for meals and travel on city business.
Mayor Nelson Harris on Saturday released the resignation letter from Alfred Dowe.
Harris asked the municipal auditor to investigate after he learned that charges to Dowe's city credit card accounted for nearly half of the council's total spending on travel and meals last year.
Documents obtained by The Roanoke Times showed that Dowe billed both the city and the state for the same expenses associated with five trips to Richmond last year for meetings of the Department of Criminal Justice Services' board.
