Getting Kids to Read

March is officially "Big Read" month in Waynesboro. The Waynesboro City Council voted Monday night to help the community get involved in the major reading initiative.

Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County are part of 117 communities nationwide chosen to participate in the program.

The book is "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. It’s the same book Harrisonburg and Rockingham County used for its "Big Read" event last year.

Many community events and programs are planned that are based on the book. Getting students to read is the main focus.

The event kickoff is scheduled for Friday, February 29 at the Augusta County Courthouse.
